  This is an English Village Pub as you hope to find it. Warn welcome, good beer and nice food. The menu has some interesting dishes, and reasonably sensible prices. We enjoyed it enough to go twice when we spent a long weekend locally

  I cannot fault the ambience and the general welcoming of the staff. However, a week ago at lunchtime I made the mistake of opting for the "calves liver" special on the blackboard (a treat seldom encountered since "mad cow disease" days.) For an over-priced £16 I was served two pieces of liver, topped with a piece of leather (whoops, overcooked bacon) and a dried-out shredded potato "whorl" beneath. At least the curly kale was fresh. My first cut revealed RAW liver, which I asked to be cooked to an edible level. Before taking the plate away, I removed the second piece which looked as if it might be in a better state (perhaps even "rare"). Sadly it was not much better and extremely stringy and inedible inside. There was a cursory apology, and nothing else, to leave one feeling that the experience fell short of expectations. I even tipped the waitress, went to pay the bill and no one would look me in the eye (perhaps expecting some strong complaint from me). So much for the customer-service skills of the management, and the time-honoured principle of voluntarily offering some sort of recompense for awful food!!

  2016 5stars. Great atmosphere and lovely food. .update March 2017 comments from family who visit there often that there might be new landlords since my initial 2016 review as they felt there had been some changes .
